We’re excited to have Vidhi Kacharia, M.D. join our team of radiologists, bringing her expertise. Dr. Kacharia is an accomplished, board-certified radiologist who recently completed the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Breast Imaging Fellowship. She also contributed to a published study on Abbreviated Breast MRI Utilization for the Journal of Breast Imaging. Dr. Kacharia joins Lauren Goldman, M.D. as the sub-specialized radiologists leading our Women’s Imaging team to provide leading, compassionate care.
Breast cancer is actually the second most common cancer-type in American women. Men are also susceptible to getting breast cancer, making up around 1% of diagnoses. Cancer risk varies based on a combination of lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors. Everyone can lower their cancer risk in three major ways: leading a healthy lifestyle, scheduling preventative screenings, and being informed about your family’s health history. To lower your breast cancer risk, try adopting lifestyle changes like: limiting alcohol consumption, eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and abstaining from smoking (both tobacco and marijuana).
We encourage our patients to be proactive with their health by obtaining recommended preventative care. There are a few reliable options for preventative screenings. For women at average risk, the American Cancer Society (ACS) advocates for getting yearly mammograms starting at 40. The Affordable Care Act requires most health insurers to pay for screening mammograms with “no out-of-pocket expenses” for women 40 and older. For women with higher risk, the ACS advises getting a breast MRI and a mammogram every year, starting at 30 years old. Additionally, the National Breast Cancer Foundation recommends that individuals perform breast self-exams once a month. Check out this infographic for self-exam instructions.
