PET/CT is an acronym that stands for two methods of imaging: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT). The combination of these imaging methods can provide anatomic information (CT) and physiologic information (PET).
Computed tomography (CT) uses x-rays and computer reconstruction to generate high resolution 3-dimensional images of the inside of the body.
PET injects a radioactive material into the body. Using a special camera the location of the radioactive material in the body can be evaluated and an image created.
PET/CT can be used to evaluate numerous diseases. Different disease processes are evaluated with different types of PET injections. For example:
- FDG – used for evaluation of cancer and metastatic disease
- NaF – used to evaluate bone lesions
- Amyvid – used to evaluate Alzheimers
- Axumin – used to evaluate prostate cancer
Patient Comfort
We try to make all of our patients feel comfortable when having a PET/CT. We understand how nervous you and your family may be at this sensitive time. We have created a spa like area separated from the rest of the office. Each patient has their own waiting area. You will be given a spa like robe, get injected with a radioactive tracer and will be given a 32 oz. bottle of contrast flavor of your choice. You will stay in this room for 40-60 minutes where you can read or watch your own television.
